I am writing this letter to you to provide an update on the re-opening of Kispiox Community School in September. I can appreciate that many of you have questions and concerns regarding the school opening as prescribed by the Ministry of Education’s back to school work plan. Developing our back to school work plan is a continuing process as we have a few communities that are dependent on providing safety not only for their students, but also for their community members. Another consideration is to provide safety for our staff as well, so as you can imagine there is still some uncertainty as not all details have been finalized yet. As more information becomes available this information will be shared with you.
You may or may not be aware that the provincial government has altered the opening for students moving school restart from Tuesday, September 8th, 2020 to Thursday, September 10th, 2020. On September 8th, 2020 our school staff will be meeting to form a health and safety committee and to review how the health and safety guidelines as prescribed by the BC Centre for Disease Control and the Provincial Health Officer will be implemented in Kispiox Community School. On Wednesday, September 9th, 2020 the teachers and staff will be confirming plans for the upcoming school year. Student orientation will begin with a gradual restart to the school year on Thursday, September 10th and Friday, September 11th, 2020. For your information the school is only allowed to have a maximum of 60 students in the school each day and we have a school population of approximately 120 students. So, this means that we will have to stagger our school days for in class instruction, but it is also important to consider that we are also trying to provide online instruction for the off days when students are not in school. We understand that some parents may be still reluctant to send their children to school and so we are working with different communities on alternative ways which will enable all students the opportunity to continue their education. More information will be provided on class cohorts, schedules, and health and safety procedures in the upcoming weeks before school restarts.
Kispiox Community School’s biggest priority is the health and safety of all our students, staff, and community members. As more updates become available information will be shared on our website, on the community page, and through email. I can appreciate that during these troubling times many of you may be anxious and uncertain, but I would like to reassure you that Kispiox Community School will be doing their best to provide a welcome and safe environment for your children. Be safe and enjoy the rest of your summer.
